Independent Living Program

The Shasta College Independent Living Program for foster youth ages 16-21 is administered by NVCSS. Our goal is to enable foster youth to achieve self-sufficiency prior to leaving the County Foster Care support system. This is accomplished through a variety of independent living program trainings and services for each participating youth. If you are a foster youth, or were in foster care between the ages of 16 and 21 years old, live in Shasta, Tehama or Trinity County, and would like further information, please contact us at the address to the right.

Training topics may include the following:

  •  Budget & banking; mock city
  •  Computer class
  •  Emancipation workshop
  •  Etiquette dinner
  •  Financial aid application (FASFA)
  •  Job skills workshop
  •  Pot luck/BBQ/swim Party
  •  Ropes course
  •  Teen panel/sex education

  •  Apply and search for college financial aid
  •  Apply for a job and interview
  •  Budget for monthly expenses
  •  Build teamworking skills
  •  Deal with leaving foster care
  •  Maintain a bank account
  •  Maintain a job and good work habits
  •  Make decisions and informed choices
  •  Prepare for college
  •  Search for and maintain a residence
