Place program

The goal of PLACE (Promoting Livable Accommodations to CalWORKs Eligible Families) is to assist CalWORKs and CalWORKs eligible families move out of motels, and into permanent housing. Take this common situation... a general laborer was permanently disabled recently and the mother is updating her job search skills through CalWORKs. The family of four is paying $800 per month for motel housing. They are seeking permanent housing with limited credit and no money for the deposits required for an apartment or for utilities. Our hope is that with the coordination of services, the family will gain the knowledge required to meet the demands of living in a house or apartment and be more prepared to retain their housing. Read about more PLACE families here.

The objectives of the PLACE Program include:

  •  Move eligible families into more conventional, permanent housing.
  •  Improve the environment of the residential motels for those families who cannot be moved immediately.
  •  Discourage CalWORKs families from moving into motels unless it is only temporary and necessary.

In assisting families the PLACE Program will:

  •  Assess the needs of families residing in motels and determine what resources are necessary and “PLACE” them in more conventional homes where children can thrive.
  •  Assist in the coordination of community services that work with families living in residential motels.
  •  Refer families who cannot immediately move from motel accommodations to educational and/or treatment services.
  •  Provide basic independent living and parenting skills.
  •  Refer families to enrichment services.
  •  Work with motel owners/managers to improve the health and safety conditions in their motels.
  •  Develop and offer refuges for children who live in motels.

More than 500 families received case management services, including coordination with and referral to appropriate services. Over 200 families have been transitioned out of motels since January of 2000. These families represent over 450 children who are now permanently housed.
